Creating your very first blog it is a very exciting journey that you could start in today’s digital world. It is a very accessible channel of communication that is opening many horizons. Whether you are very passionate about expressing your creativity, sharing your experience and expertise, or building an online presence of your business through your blog, this is the right tool to connect with your audience.

I found that getting started is the hardest part of all, mixed with a lot of emotions. It is overwhelming especially when you do not know where to start.

But … do not be afraid. Once you made the decision that you want to create a blog, everything will fall into place.

So, I got you covered my friend! I’ve been there and I know how it feels.

In this comprehensive guide, I’ll walk you through the process of starting your own blog, from the idea stage to publication.

Here are the steps to starting your Blog:

Step 1: Define your niche and purpose

Before moving any further, take a pen and a piece of paper and write down all the topics:

– you are passioned about and they light you up

– you want to discuss with your future audience

– the way you are going to serve your audience and the problem you want to solve for them

You maybe ask yourself: how do I know what my passion is or what topics could I discuss with my audience? To answer these questions, I encourage you to look back at your past and spot all the things you performed with joy and excitement, and they came easy for you to do. Write them down and keep them handy. These are the areas (your niche) that align with your interests and expertise, will keep you motivated, and will also attract like-minded readers that are interested in your content.

Step 2: Choose your blog platform and a hosting provider

There are many platforms available; however, each of them offers different features and benefits.

You could choose WordPress, Medium, Tumblr, or LinkedIn.

You could consider a free platform or you could create your blog on a platform you have to pay for.

  1. Using a free platform

This comes with several advantages and disadvantages

Advantages:

  • You do not need to pay anything and you could “test the water” by creating your blog on platforms such as Blogger or WordPress.com
  • You could create a blog with no technical skills, so these platforms are user-friendly, especially for the beginners

Disadvantages:

  • Your blog is held by a platform you do not have control of
  • Your blog could be accessed through a link with the extension blogger.com or wordpress.com for example joeblow.blogger.com (it cannot be labeled joeblow.com)
  • You do not have 100% control of the content you are going to publish. There will be posted advertisements on your blog in return for a free blog platform that you are using. These advertisements do not necessarily align with the nature of your business or the type of topics you discuss on your blog
  • Once the extension of your blog is noticed, any person with minimum knowledge about internet platforms for blogs will know that you are a beginner and preferred a free blog platform. This could affect your credibility with your audience
  1. Create a blog on the WordPress.org platform

The difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org:

  • WordPress.com is a site where you can create your blog for free
  • WordPress platform is a program that you can download on your laptop and you need a hosting service

Website hosting (where your blog lives):

If you are starting your business from the very beginning, I recommend creating a website with WordPress.org and hosting it with Bluehost. This is an efficient manner to ensure you have control of your blog and content, and that your blog is up and running at all times.

Bluehost: This is the WordPress.org longest-running recommended host that is delivering best-in-class performance at the fastest speed.

Step 3: Choose the name of your blog

This is the fun and most interesting part: name your blog.

You need to start brainstorming and decide which name will better represent your blog topics but do not overthink. Your brand will be built in time. Do you remember your niche? Go back to your paper and look at the topics you unleashed. Start creating the name based on these ideas by combining the words and phrases until it stands out to you.

Write down all the combinations and rank them from 1 to 10. Check if any of these names are available for your domain and also for your blog. You could use Bluehost’s domain name checker to see if any of them are available.

A few tips:

  • Choose a memorable name, short, concise, meaningful
  • The name should be easy to remember, easy to say, easy to understand
  • Avoid using numbers or any homophones (words that should be the same but are spelled differently)
  • Ensure there are no misspelled words

Step 4: Customize your blog’s design

Customizing your blog is endless as you can utilize various themes or templates that reflect your style and brand.

WordPress offers a variety of themes you can choose from.

Themes are the foundation of your blog design and include core functionalities.

Click on the “Customize” button on your active theme and from there your imagination will take over in terms of the images you want to upload, fonts you want to utilize, appearances, and plugins.

Step 5: Create the essential pages

Setting up the main pages of your blog is easy.

From the menu, you could update the default pages or add more pages as will fit your blog needs.

Pages like “About”, “Contact”, and “Blog” should be set on your website. These pages help your audience learn more about you and your blog, and get familiar with the themes you are focusing on your blog.

Step 6: Create a Compelling Content

Start creating content for your blog! Write high-quality, engaging posts that provide value to your audience. Incorporate visuals like images, infographics, and videos to make your content more appealing.

As mentioned in Step 1, finding your niche is an important step; however, if you still do not know what areas are you interested in, it is ok. You’ll see that your blog posts will come from your personal experiences, successes, failures, passions, and learning curves.

Write down at least 20 working topics from these areas and ask yourself:

  • What have I learned from this experience that I could share with the world?
  • How this experience might serve my audience if they face the same challenge?

Step 7: Post and promote your blog

New blog entries are created from the WordPress dashboard. Now is the time to post your first masterpiece and share it with the world.

You’ve done amazing!

Share your blog posts on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to attract visitors. Engage with your audience by responding to comments and messages, and consider guest posting on other blogs to reach a wider audience.

Step 8: Monetize your Blog

If you’re interested in making money from your blog, explore monetization options like affiliate marketing, sponsored content, advertising, or selling digital products or services.

Affiliate Marketing

This type of monetization is straightforward to leverage your presence to sell products for someone else.

Affiliate marketing offers a powerful way to monetize their content by partnering with brands and earning commissions for promoting their products or services. To effectively utilize affiliate marketing on your blog, start by researching and selecting reputable affiliate programs that align with your niche and audience interests. Once you’ve joined relevant programs, strategically incorporate affiliate links within your content, seamlessly integrating them into blog posts, product reviews, or recommendation lists. Remain focused on providing genuine value to your audience by promoting products or services you sincerely believe in and that resonate with your readers. Transparency is key, so always disclose your affiliate relationships to maintain trust with your readers.

Make money with advertisements

You could sell advertisement space on your blog. How?

By using Google Ads; however, you need to build your audience first, and attract high traffic so your visitors will be exposed to the ads posted on your blog.

Sell physical products

Whether it’s handmade crafts, specialty gadgets, or curated merchandise, your blog serves as a personalized storefront where visitors can discover and purchase items they love. You can effortlessly present your products, complete with compelling descriptions and captivating visuals, enticing visitors to explore further

It is recommended to be consistent and post every week or every two weeks or monthly.

Starting a blog requires time, effort, and dedication, but with persistence and a passion for your chosen topic, you can build a successful online presence and connect with a like-minded audience.

Lastly, have your blog sell your main business.

You’ve got this!
